Ukraine is prepared for a potential halt in gas transit through Hungary’s territory. Even if Budapest blocks this route, the country possesses sufficient alternative methods for importing natural gas from Europe.
Key Points:
- Ukraine is ready for a blockage of gas transit via Hungary and has alternative routes for fuel imports from Europe.
- Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that Hungary’s political motivations do not endanger Ukraine’s energy balance due to the diversification of its supply system.
Ukraine’s MFA Responds to Hungary’s Gas Threats
This was stated by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgiy Tsykhy, at a press briefing.
The MFA spokesperson emphasized that gas imports through the Hungarian border are currently proceeding normally. However, should Prime Minister Viktor Orbán decide to cease this flow, it would primarily affect Hungary itself.
Over the past year, the Hungarian side earned over a billion dollars from transit and export operations related to gas supplies to Ukraine.
The sole consequence of this would be the deprivation of Hungary’s economy of over a billion dollars… Orbán would simply take this money from Hungarian pockets. But it is his decision if he wishes to do so.

Ukraine has established a diversified supply system, enabling it to receive fuel from various European directions.
According to Tsykhy, the political considerations of the neighboring country will not pose a critical threat to Ukraine’s energy balance.
Ukraine, unlike Hungary, is a diversified nation. Therefore, we are not dependent on what the prime minister of a neighboring country might decide for political reasons within the framework of his election campaign.
Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that the country might cut off gas supplies to Ukraine. Budapest issued an ultimatum: fuel exports would not resume until the transit of Russian oil through the “Druzhba” pipeline is restored.
